On Watching "Girl Crazy"
I know the only things worth saying
are the things that can't be said,
and I know that Judy Garland’s dead,
and that the filmic reveries one sees
of her in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer DVDs
are tricks of digital technology – but
if you have the barest curiosity about
whatever makes a human being be –
or what rapport, through voice, that
Time might after all have with Eternity –
you might consider listening to Judy
Garland sing, in 1943, “But Not for Me.”.
