Ripening is odd.
Secret strategy of God.
Green begins to bleed to red:
complicating sugar

out of the acidity of infant seed:
offering a sweeter spread
for which the living
turn their need to greed: strawberries

are full of sex –
full of the capacity to hex –
pleasure is their measure of success.
Seems to offer evidence

of linear progression:
stages passed from birth
through lush maturity to death.
But that’s a trick.

God is slick.
