On Reading Oma's Letters

Gently chiding, loving,
troubled, quick to take offense:
my German grandma’s letters
build an intricate defense --

a shadowed stance --
covertly hurt persistence --
as if in face of a bewildered
loneliness in her existence.

It’s just a glimpse. I don’t know
more than I had known before
about my own penumbral
family lore.
