The Fraternal Oligarchy of Your Soul

One brother commandeers the symbol of all generating
power – the other grips the contract to the terms

of which you have to cower in obeisance eternally –
though neither will reveal a thing, besides fraternally

appealing to you now and then to hear them sing
Al Jolson songs – to which they can be counted on

to welcome you to hum along. They like to harmonize
on “Rockabye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody”

and love to jam on “Mammy” – their swelling
camaraderie can really be infectious. But don’t forget

they hold the sole prospectus of your destiny:
the scepter and the deed from which totemically proceed

the rest of both the worst and best of what’s to come.
So only very softly hum. In general, play dumb.
