Today You Couldn’t Look Your Conscience in the Eye

Today you couldn’t look your conscience in the eye.
You had to hold it up and out, away from you
while you persisted in what you had plausibly
convinced yourself had been a necessary lie.

But then you wondered why
you needed this relentless spy
whose endless mission was to pry
and prod you to deny.

And so you let it sigh –
allowed its weightless blue transparency to float
above, beyond and into the immeasurable sky --
and waved it a goodbye.
