Liz

I have to animate the spirit of the thing –
provoke, imagine it into a sentient force –
endowed with potent human qualities – to bring
a habitable understanding of the course

of instinct it can’t not intend to take: an aim
so full of ways and means and ends
that they supply a personality – and name:
a new addition to my sneaky tribe of friends.

Anthropomorphic though this obviously is,
it seems, for vivid meaning, I require it –
so let me introduce you, if I may, to Liz –
who, though you may not overmuch desire it,

now makes us bear the weight of her tumidity:
she is that heaviness of summer air: humidity.
