Inside you’ve always had a cardinal

who sorts out the unpardonable

from the sins he will permit you to let slide.

But lately he does not appear to care too

much about what’s happening on either side.

He seems to have lost interest both

in damning and in pardoning. Perhaps

he’d rather putter ‘round the pantry,

or be in the backyard gardening.
