You Thought that Life Meant Sitting for Velasquez

It seemed like mustering the force
and mastering its application
always drained the sap from fortitude
and tried what you believed was soul.

But with the three of you,
today, the whole became an easier
and freer thing, far less a matter
of exactitude than soft release.

And so you pose for us, together,
for a moment, in this unaccustomed
state of almost peace. It’s like

you thought that life meant
sitting for Velasquez but
the painter was Matisse.
