And Yet

You’re almost at the point where you can fly –
and yet you need a boost –
a sort of comrade, on the sly –
upon whose head, and favor, you might roost –

it is this way with thinking, too –
the layers of it which you’re sinking through
which suddenly, abruptly evanesce to light,
so that your mind erupts, almost, to flight –

and yet, not quite.

June Sighs

June sighs –
as she considers
the Julys
she’s turned into
before –
before she turns
into one more.

Principle Upon Which Everything Depends

Dancing draws to it
whatever doesn’t move –
as if
to prove

a principle upon which
everything depends:
the sort of lesson you’d
imagine Physics lends.

Motion knows itself
through what is still.
Stillness fathoms
what it will.

Park Yourself Upon a Mystic’s Lap

When the solstice moment fades,
which it does instantly,
the daylight starts to waver too –
so incrementally you will not notice
it give way - to beckon to the dark.

Park yourself upon a mystic’s lap
and, every evening, monitor with him
the passage of the star we call the sun
as it coerces our Earth’s axis
from its Yin to Yang: it is a way

to love whatever’s going on. Blowing on
a sea of candles as God does when
he is not igniting them, now gently
undermines, incites the endless
cycle: makes it interesting.

Light, now splintering,
brings shadow –
slowly turns our faces
to the night.
