There was, as
you had known there’d be,
a balm of
calm in his demeanor – yet,
as soon as he
had trained his eyes on you,
an equally
familiar glint in him of seeing
a surprise in
you – a sentience ready to assess,
more ready
than you might have liked.
The prospect
of a conversation spiked
you into just
the tiniest distress. All you’d
ever wanted him, or anyone, to say was “yes.”.
