When Human Beings Talk

When human beings talk,
some unseen creatures gawk.
Dimensional amazement at us
is their fare. Though
we don’t know they’re there,

we’ll sometimes, vaguely, through
the air, sense waves of their
bewilderment and joy. They watch
our gestures, hear our voices
and each one rejoices

in the miracle we manifest.
Passing every test – possessed
of language, and the rest –
we seem to them to speak to
and to hear each other with such

strange unplanned, offhand
abandon. Conversation is more
beautiful than we may
understand. So when we talk,
they gawk, and think we’re grand.
